INTERVIEW
Unlocking the Hidden Potential
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has approved investment of about
26,000 crores to monetise the marginal fields that were discovered in offshore so far. As the international crude prices were quite low these were uneconomical. The hydrocarbon major accounts for almost 79 per cent of India's crude oil and 54 per cent of natural gas production. ONGC has monetised 50 marginal fields and plans to monetise remaining fields expeditiously to meet the burgeoning domestic demand of oil and gas. J G Chaturvedi, Executive Director - Chief, New & Marginal Field Development, ONGC says that this stems from the steep rise in energy prices and indigenous demand. He sees this as the way forward in the years to come and says, “These will contribute significantly to meet the supplies of almost 3-4 MMT oil per annum in the country in the years to come”. In an exclusive interview with Mittravinda Ranjan he elucidates on the various production strategies and the challenges to unlock the potential of these hidden assets...

Apt Policy Environment - Key to Oil Exploration Investments
The average price of oil scaled new highs during the past decade (2001-2010), much higher than the levels seen in the
preceding 14 decades and double of that in the preceding decade of 1991-2000. As a result, suddenly strong interest
has aroused in oil exploration globally. In this context, it becomes very much pertinent to study the behaviour of
oil companies with regard to investments in oil exploration and factor that plays key role behind these investments
- government policies...

Demand Spree
Domestic natural gas production in India is about 120 million metric standard cubic metre
per day (MMSCMD), as against a demand of around 189 MMSCMD. Currently, the country is importing 46.5 units of Liquefied Natural
Gas (LNG). By the end of 12th Five Year Plan (2012-13 to 2016-17), the demand of natural gas is expected to grow over two-fold. As
per the Oil Ministry's projections, from the current demand of natural gas of 189 units, the demand will increase to 473 units
(in 2016-17). If we go by the projections, the overall demand would grow from 293 MMSCMD (in 2012-13) to 473 MMSCMD (in
2016-17) over the 12th plan period and from 494 MMSCMD (in 2017-18) to 606 MMSCMD(in 2021-22) over the 13th plan period...
